Well we have been having a great time together learning rules and procedures the last few weeks. The kids are doing great at earning stickers, marbles, and smiley's. I am so proud of them for being fast learners.

We have been learning the following concepts:
Reading: Reading and Sequencing the events in a Fable and identifying the lesson from it. - We have been reading fun stories such as The Hare and The Tortoise.
Writing: Review of 1st grade recount narrative - We have been writing about how to get ready for something such as school.
Word Work: CVC words, open, closed, and vowel-consonant-silent "e" syllables and word families - We have learned that an open syllable has a consonant and a vowel but the vowel says it's long sound such as "be" and a closed syllable has a consonant, vowel, consonant (which closes the vowel in) and makes the vowel say its short sound.
Math: Doubles, Doubles plus/minus one, fact families - We have learned that Doubles plus/minus one is a hard concept but we can learn it with practice. This is when you have a problem such as 4+5= and you can use the doubles that you know to help you solve it. 5+5=10 which is one more than my original problem of 4+5=. 4+4=8 is another double that is near my problem but is one less than my original problem. Knowing this can help students solve basic math facts faster.
Science: Science safety/Notebooks - We have been creating our science journals, discussing safety procedures and learning about tools that scientists use.
Social Studies: Listening Skills and Good Citizenship - We have been practicing how to listen and what Good Citizenship is. We looked up the word Citizen in a glossary and a dictionary and compared the definitions.

Don't forget Parent Orientation tomorrow from 6:00-7:30 here at the school.
Thanks!
