Well we have been having a great time together learning rules and procedures the last few weeks. The kids are doing great at earning stickers, marbles, and smiley's. I am so proud of them for being fast learners.

We have been learning the following concepts:
Reading: Reading and Sequencing the events in a Fable and identifying the lesson from it. - We have been reading fun stories such as The Hare and The Tortoise.
Writing: Review of 1st grade recount narrative - We have been writing about how to get ready for something such as school.
Word Work: CVC words, open, closed, and vowel-consonant-silent "e" syllables and word families - We have learned that an open syllable has a consonant and a vowel but the vowel says it's long sound such as "be" and a closed syllable has a consonant, vowel, consonant (which closes the vowel in) and makes the vowel say its short sound.
Math: Doubles, Doubles plus/minus one, fact families - We have learned that Doubles plus/minus one is a hard concept but we can learn it with practice. This is when you have a problem such as 4+5= and you can use the doubles that you know to help you solve it. 5+5=10 which is one more than my original problem of 4+5=. 4+4=8 is another double that is near my problem but is one less than my original problem. Knowing this can help students solve basic math facts faster.
Science: Science safety/Notebooks - We have been creating our science journals, discussing safety procedures and learning about tools that scientists use.
Social Studies: Listening Skills and Good Citizenship - We have been practicing how to listen and what Good Citizenship is. We looked up the word Citizen in a glossary and a dictionary and compared the definitions.

Don't forget Parent Orientation tomorrow from 6:00-7:30 here at the school.
Thanks!

First Day of School

Well today was the 1st day of school. We all survived!!! It was so exciting to meet all my new students. I only have 13 students right now. It was a long day of learning and practicing procedures. We had some fun too. The students worked together to put shark puzzles together while working on the concept of teamwork. I saw lots of students working together and encouraging each other. I was really impressed with my students today. They did an awesome job!!!!! Can't wait for tomorrow so we can continue learning about rules and procedures to make our year successful.
Please make sure you are checking your child's folder and backpack each night so that you are able to get the necessary paperwork filled out. I also am sending home information about our class so you will want to read it so you are aware of everything, such as homework.
Homework came home tonight. It is super easy. They need to read 20min. Do a math problem and practice spelling their word wall words. Homework can be done in a notebook or on separate sheets of paper. It needs to all be turned in on Friday.
If you have any questions about the items coming home, feel free to ask.

Thanks for a great 1st day!!!

Welcome to My Classroom Blog!

I am so excited to begin my classroom blog this year. I will be adding pictures and information  to give you a look into the preparation of my classroom. I am already excited about getting my classroom set up again. One of my favorite parts about the beginning of the year is setting up my classroom. My goal is to update once a week if possible.
